Save the Date Magnets: What Are They and Where Can You Buy Them?

By Kristine B

Every year a few months before the summer wedding season, my refrigerator magnet collection starts to grow. Save the Date magnets are a popular way to spread the word about upcoming nuptials and for good reason.

Magnets are relatively cheap and leave the receiver with a really handy reminder to make sure they're free that day. A magnet is also something useful that can be put into use right away and used forever. Everyone likes to get more magnets for their fridge. It's trend that's really caught on and is sure to only continue for years to come.

Many brides are choosing to do much of the work by themselves. Finding and making Save the Date magnets at home is quite easy. And, for brides that want someone else to do the work, several websites offer up services. For inbetween approach, save the date magnet kits, like those above, offer the best of both worlds.

DIY

Making save the date magnets from scratch is going to require some practice and thought. An easy approach is simply to make a simple design using a word processor and to print it and glue onto a magnet. But, using that method risks creating a sloppy project unless you're super crafty and neat.

And, often I've found with DIY projects that require a home printer, I spend just as much as if I sent the printing out because of the high costs of home printer ink and the fact that I usually have several mess ups that waste ink and other materials.

If you go those route, be ready to try several different mocks up, a few types of magnets and different types of glue to get both a smooth finish and a strong bond between the paper and the magnet.

Design Ideas

Save the date magnets leave room for creativity and flair. Some of my favorites:

  • Rather simple magnets that match the other wedding materials like the invitations etc. I think this makes for a nice, memorable feel.
  • Calender save the dates. These are like a page from a calender with the wedding date marked in red or seen easily.
  • Picture save the dates. It's a nice visual for people that ask about the save the date magnet to have a picture of the couple on the magnet.

Sites to Buy Full Designs

If you would rather order the magnets and forget it, several sites online offer their services.

Etsy, the homemade site has several designers that list their work and will make custom designs just for you. but, custom designs are pricey and this can be an expensive option.

Vistaprint offers a more economical choice with a few premade designs to chose from and the option to upload a design to the site.

Zazzle is another site that allows a user to upload their own design on to a magnet and order them for home delivery.

Tiny Prints offers several save the date magnet ideas with coordinating invitations through the Paper Diva's Collection.
